Vacuum-Insulated Cryogenic Storage Tank: Key Features

Vacuum-insulated cryogenic storage tanks are specialized vessels designed to store liquefied gases (e.g., nitrogen, oxygen, argon, LNG) at temperatures below -150°C. They used a vacuum compartment combined with high-grade insulation materials, which can reduce heat transfer and prevent the low-temperature substances in the storage tank from evaporating too quickly.

Core Structural Features

Inner lining: Austenitic stainless steel features high strength and low-temperature resistance, making it an ideal choice for manufacturing the inner lining. It could be that the storage tanks are designed to withstand extremely low temperatures to prevent cracking.

Outer Jacket: Made of robust carbon steel or stainless steel to shield the inner container from external impacts, environmental hazards, and structural stress.

Vacuum Space: The annular gap between the inner and outer vessels acts as a thermal barrier by removing the medium (air) required for conductive and convective heat transfer.

The vacuum space is the core of the insulation system. It is usually filled with high-performance materials such as perlite powder, or a multi-layer insulation (MLI) structure is adopted to block radiant heat, thereby improving the thermal efficiency.

Operational Features

Low evaporation loss (boiling overflow): With the high vacuum insulation technology, the low-temperature liquid can be stored for several weeks or even months. The amount evaporated each day is very small, usually not exceeding 0.05%.

Pressure boosting system: Through the heat exchanger, a portion of the liquid refrigerant is vaporized, thereby establishing working pressure within the storage tank.

Pressure boosting system: Some liquid media are vaporized through the vaporizer, thereby increasing the pressure within the storage tank. This makes the process of pumping liquid or supplying gas much more stable.

Safety Relief Devices: Equipped with critical redundancy mechanisms including pressure relief valves, rupture discs, and vacuum gauges to prevent catastrophic over-pressurization.

Common Design Types

Fixed storage tanks: Vertical or horizontal bulk storage tanks used in industrial fields, medical institutions, and scientific laboratories, etc.

Miniature storage tanks: Suitable for medium consumption scenarios where continuous supply can be achieved without large-scale infrastructure.

Dewar Flask and Portable Vacuum Bottles: Small, highly portable vacuum bottles used for daily laboratory or medical purposes, allowing for transportation and storage of small amounts of cryogenic liquids.

ISO tank containers: Specifically designed for transporting low-temperature liquids, these are multi-modal transport containers that achieve vacuum insulation.
