Liquid argon is widely used in welding, semiconductor, metallurgy, and scientific research fields. However, if the tank is not selected correctly, it will cause safety hazards and increase operational costs, which can be a headache for you for a long time. Many foreign customers often make mistakes when they purchase for the first time. Today, we will explain the selection logic in detail to help you avoid unnecessary detours.
1. Calculate the usage first, then discuss the model
Don’t rush to look through the product catalog. First, use a pen to calculate. How many argon arc welding machines does your factory have? How much gas does each machine consume per hour? Multiply the total usage and add 15% to 20% as a reserve. This is the rule of the old engineers. Common specifications range from 1 cubic to 200 cubic, and small workshops can use 1 to 5 cubic quick cold storage tanks. For centralized gas supply systems, 10 cubic, 30 cubic, or even larger tanks are suitable. Tanks that are too large will waste funds, while those that are too small will cause frequent refilling and be troublesome.
2. Decide whether to choose a vertical or horizontal tank based on your site conditions
Vertical tanks take up less space and are suitable for factories with limited space; horizontal tanks are more flexible and can be installed against the wall or in low-rise high-ceiling workshops. Some manufacturers support non-standard customization. Before placing an order, measure the on-site dimensions and the pipeline layout precisely and send them over to avoid the problem of not being able to install when you arrive.
3.Material and insulation are hard indicators, and they cannot be compromised
The inner liner must be made of austenitic stainless steel, such as S30408, which is resistant to low temperatures and corrosion. There is no room for negotiation. The outer shell should be made of Q245R or Q345R pressure vessel steel plates. The inner layer is filled with pearlite sand and vacuum is drawn to high vacuum. Once the vacuum is broken, frost and sweating will occur, and the evaporation rate will increase sharply. The subsequent maintenance costs will bring you down. The weld seams must be inspected for helium mass spectrometry leakage. This is the bottom line, not an optional feature.
4. Pressure and temperature parameters should be aligned with your working conditions
The normal boiling point of liquid argon is -185.7 degrees Celsius at standard pressure. The design temperature is generally -196 degrees Celsius. The common working pressures are 0.8 megapascals and 1.6 megapascals. Choose the working pressure one step higher than the design pressure. 0.84, 1.32, and 1.68 megapascals are mainstream values. Check each item when selecting the model.
5. Safety accessories cannot be missing at all
Safety valves, pressure gauges, liquid level gauges, and emergency shut-off valves are indispensable. When liquid argon leaks, the volume expands by approximately 780 times, and the oxygen in the enclosed space is squeezed out, causing suffocation. Operators should be equipped with anti-freeze clothing and respiratory protection equipment. This is not a suggestion but a rule.
6. How to choose a supplier? Three principles to follow
1. Look at the qualifications. The design and manufacturing license for pressure vessels is the threshold.
2. Look at international transportation experience. Can they handle the booking of dangerous goods shipping, smooth customs clearance at the destination port, and can they keep the delivery date?
3. Look at the response speed of after-sales service. Overseas projects are most afraid of problems not being addressed by someone. Choose a manufacturer with a long-term export service record and smooth communication, and the cooperation will be more reliable. International liquid argon prices fluctuate frequently.
