Operating an ammonia refrigeration system involves finding a balance between efficiency and absolute safety. 1.Sizing: Don’t Just Guess the Capacity

Many growers tend to choose smaller-sized condensing machines due to the desire for “smaller is better”. However, if the machine is too small, the speed at which the heat dissipation fins freeze will increase, causing the fins to accumulate frost and blocking the air circulation. At the same time, the exhaust pressure escapes, and the cooling efficiency of the evaporator drops sharply.

When calculating the size of the condensing machine, it is not enough to only consider the average usage. More attention should be paid to the demand during peak hours or when it is started. Generally, it is recommended to set the machine size 10% – 20% larger to meet the theoretical maximum demand. In thick frost conditions (in humid weather), the rate of frost accumulation on the machine body will also be faster.

Ammonia at cryogenic temperatures is aggressive. A standard carbon steel vaporizer will become brittle and crack over time.

Since ammonia is toxic and flammable, the design must prioritize leak prevention.

Welding: Check if the manufacturer uses TIG welding for the headers. This ensures a smooth, penetration-free seal that handles vibration better than standard arc welding.

Thermal Expansion: Liquid ammonia expands massively when it turns to gas. The vaporizer design must have a “floating” head or expansion bends to absorb this stress without snapping the pipes.

4.Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)

Don’t just focus on the price. Cheaper products may use thinner tubes, which cause rapid corrosion and result in a lower price. High-quality air evaporators do not consume energy when operating (because they use the surrounding air), but the maintenance cost may be different. Choose products with a modular design so that you can remove or replace individual electric heating tubes without having to throw away the entire device.
