Differences Between ISO Tanks and Standard Industrial Tanks

ISO tanks are mainly used for transporting bulk liquids, gases and powders by trucks, vans and ships. They are designed and manufactured according to international standards (ISO) and are mobile pressurized containers.Standard industrial tanks, on the other hand, are generally fixed devices, industrial tanks that are permanently installed for static material storage during industrial production processes.

The essential differences between these two storage solutions in terms of mobility, design, capacity, etc. are as follows:

1.The fixation methods of storage tanks are different.

ISO tanks: The original design purpose of ISO tanks is to facilitate transportation, making them suitable for truck, railway and ship transportation.

Standard Industrial Tanks: Built to be stationary. Once installed at a facility (such as a chemical plant or food processing facility), they are not meant to be moved, especially while filled.

2.Design and Construction

ISO tank: The tank has a rectangular steel frame structure, and the tank is installed and fixed within the steel frame. This steel frame enables stacking and handling, similar to standard 20-foot containers. The tanks have a certain pressure rating and excellent insulation properties, and are suitable for transporting volatile chemicals, cryogenic liquids, or food-grade products.

Conventional industrial tanks: They can be cylindrical or rectangular, and are usually made from materials specifically designed for the intended storage content, such as carbon steel, stainless steel, fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP), or plastic. They are directly fixed on concrete foundations rather than being mounted on transportation frames.

3.Capacity and Usage

ISO tanks: Standard capacity: 17,500 – 26,000 liters (Compared to the standard capacity, the capacity of some storage tanks can reach up to 35,000 liters or even larger as per the requirements.) They act as highly efficient, reusable packaging that reduces the need for smaller drums or IBCs.

Standard Industrial Tanks: Built for larger-scale operational storage. The capacity can range from several thousand liters up to several million liters, depending on the requirements of the facility.

4.Regulations and Standards

ISO tanks: Unlike ordinary tanks, ISO tanks must comply with globally recognized standards in terms of safety and dimensions. As they are transported via roads, railways, and international waterways, they are equipped with emergency vents, pressure relief valves, and leak control devices.

Standard industrial storage tanks: They are usually designed and manufactured in accordance with local standards and regulations, environmental laws, and specific industry standards.
