A natural gas pressure reduction station is a facility where high-pressure natural gas from the main pipeline is safely reduced in pressure, lowered to a level suitable for distribution to the gas distribution network or for use by commercial facilities, residential buildings, and other end-user equipment, and equipped with devices to control this pressure.
Why is it needed?
Generally speaking, in order to maximize the transportation volume and efficiency, natural gas is usually transported through high-pressure pipelines.However, this high pressure cannot be used directly by end-users or standard equipment. These stations act as an essential “step-down” mechanism, much like an electrical transformer, ensuring safe and steady pressure delivery.
Key Components
A standard pressure reduction station (pressure regulating station) generally consists of the following components:
Pressure regulator/valve: This is the core component of the pressure reduction station, which can automatically adjust the high-pressure incoming gas pressure to a relatively stable and preset low-pressure outgoing gas pressure.
Filter/Filter screen: Installed on the pressure reduction station, it is used to filter dirt, rust, and debris in the pipeline, etc., to protect the sensitive pressure regulator and downstream equipment.
Safety relief valve: A fault protection device, when abnormal pressure changes occur in the system, it can automatically discharge the excess gas to prevent pipeline rupture.
Isolation valve: A manual valve used for closing the gas path during maintenance, also known as a stop valve.
Bypass pipeline: When the regulating pipeline needs maintenance, the bypass pipeline can be used to ensure the continuous flow of gas.
Where Are They Used?
City Gate Stations: Where regional high-pressure transmission lines reduce pressure to enter local city gas distribution networks.
Industrial plants and power plants: These facilities supply fuel to combustion boilers, steam turbines, and specialized burners through pressurized gases.
CNG Stations: Compressed Natural Gas facilities that reduce high storage pressures to levels compatible with CNG dispensers and vehicle engines.
